We all know about the most powerful tech giants in recent times, half of the world use Facebook as a social media platform, use Amazon for business. Till date, these tech giants have a monopoly in the market but after the virtual congressional antitrust hearing, these monopolies should be faded. Small businesses and startups should be flourish again. But these tech giants have gifted us many services or products that undeniably changed the world. Google in India become part of daily routine. But the world becomes digitalize and Artificial Intelligence can bring the revolution in transformative technology. Now you must be thinking that what is AI? In short, this is a kind of intelligence demonstrated by machines. Sound weird right? But we all use this on an everyday basis, through our smartphones or games. AI technologies won’t work properly unless companies address the issues through their heart.
AI is a very interesting technology for all of us. Many tech giants invest lots of money in this technology. AI has been using to develop numerous fields like medical, electronic trading platforms, remote sensing, robotics, etc. AI brings a revolution in education and transportation. ITU takes an initiative to use AI for employing in several institutions to tackle social and economic challenges. Researches of At Stanford are using AI to analyze satellite images. Through this process, they can identify which area has the highest poverty level and help them accordingly. Agricultural robots, Predictive Analytics, crop, and soil monitoring- have made the whole system of agriculture much more advanced. But like other technologies, AI is a double-edged sword. This technology has positive and negative implications too. If it falls into the wrong hand, it would definitely bring disaster. An app called DeepNude is the most relevant example of the negative use of AI, where AI used to create comprising images of unsuspecting women.
As we know people who work with AI must be smart and wise. AI technology needs not only working efficiency but also understanding the potentials harms and AI tech impact on people. AI technology will bring world-changing upgraded technologies, products, and services. Fortunately, many prominent voices and tech giants in AI are leading down the path. But there are many companies that treated and executed AI in a very poor manner. Genderify was the bad joke of AI technology. Genderify used NLP (natural language processing) to help companies identify customer’s gender by using their email id, user name, and name. They made a complicated, absurd, and problematic and when AI got ahold of it to put it through its strides, they found it dreadfully biased. These kind of poor and ill-conceived ideas of applying AI or technology are popping up everywhere now.
Expanding AI sectors, already experiencing reckoning and tech giants are facing it after a long time. For example, most recently a paper was published that AI was used to identify criminality from people’s faces. As a result, that paper has been withdrawn from publication. Also, there are important studies on bias in facial recognition being the cause ban and moratoriums the several used technologies in the US. Proper legislation is needed to combat these kinds of potential abuses. Also, proper research on this fact finds intractable problems with biasness in well-known data sets. AI ethicists, researchers, and experts will try hard to improve AI technology. They tried hard to stop these kinds of misuse of AI technology. According to them, there is no problem to use AI in surveillance, military, policing, employment, and agriculture in the future. Big tech giants like IBM, Microsoft, and Amazon take back their massive investment in AI-based face recognition. These companies did this move either to avoid legislative punishment or it may be a PR stunt. But these companies granted the value of reducing damages than breaking things to move faster. Now, we need to be skeptical and use AI for a healthier ecosystem. Hope this can nurture humanity as well as improving technology.
